INDUSTRY WATCH- PACKS ABUSE
This page is meant to show how the tobacco industry uses cigarette packs in Africa to advertise its products. Effective implementation of Article 11 of the WHO FCTC will shift the role of the tobacco pack from being an advertising tool for the tobacco industry to one that promotes public health. There is an urgent need for African countries to introduce pictorial health warnings on packages whose effectiveness have been proved by several studies.

THE TOBACCO INDUSTRY AND ITS ALLIES

The ’tobacco industry’ does not consist only of manufacturers of tobacco products: it also includes those engaged in all aspects of the growing, manufacture, distribution and sales of tobacco, who are likely to be averse to effective tobacco control. The WHO FCTC defines the tobacco industry as “tobacco manufacturers, wholesale distributors and importers of tobacco products”.
