ATN Strengthens Botswana’s National Response to NCDs Through Tobacco Control Leadership
As part of Botswana’s coordinated efforts to address the rising burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), the Anti Tobacco Network (ATN), an ATCA member in Botswana is playing a pivotal role in advancing tobacco control and supporting individuals on their cessation journey.
Under the Government of Botswana’s multi-sectoral NCD strategy, civil society organizations are actively engaged in key areas including:
- Cancer awareness and screening
- Diabetes awareness and screening
- Alcohol awareness and addiction referral
- Tobacco awareness and addiction referral
ATN has been entrusted with leading national efforts on tobacco-related awareness and addiction support. While Botswana currently lacks specialized cessation services, ATN has stepped in to fill this gap by offering a tailored cessation programme facilitated by a trained counsellor. This initiative provides personalized guidance to individuals seeking to quit tobacco, ensuring they are not alone in their journey.
In a recent collaboration with Bona Naledi Organisation, another civil society partner focused on NCDs, ATN conducted capacity-building sessions for Community Health Mobilisers. The training equipped frontline mobilisers with essential knowledge and tools to deliver effective tobacco control messaging and connect tobacco users with support services.
ATN’s ongoing activities further demonstrate its commitment to community-centered advocacy and strategic engagement. These activities include:
- Radio Campaigns: Disseminating messages that expose tobacco industry tactics aimed at undermining the implementation of Botswana’s Tobacco Control Act, 2021.
- University Outreach: Engaging students on campuses to address the growing use of emerging tobacco products such as vaping and shisha.
- Community Mobilization: Conducting outreach in malls and homes to raise awareness, screen for tobacco use, and provide referrals for cessation support.
- Strategic Partnerships: Collaborating with the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) to extend tobacco control education to underserved and remote communities.
Through these initiatives, ATN continues to exemplify the power of civil society in driving national tobacco control efforts and advancing the broader NCD agenda. As an ATCA member, ATN’s work reflects the Alliance’s shared commitment to African-led, community-rooted public health advocacy.
