The tobacco industry is known to use varied of tactics to shape and influence tobacco control policy. It generally uses its economic power, lobbying and marketing machinery, and manipulation of the media to discredit scientific research and influence governments in order to further its deadly business. It also invests heavily in philanthropic contributions into social programs to create a positive public image under the guise of corporate social responsibility. This section exposes cases of tobacco industry practices aimed at interfering with tobacco control efforts in Africa.
