ATCA works to promote the development and implementation of international, regional and national legal instruments and policies on tobacco control within the Africa region.

ATCA believes in:

  • Adopting comprehensive FCTC-compliant laws and policies across Africa.
  • 100% smoke-free environments across Africa.
  • At least 50% pictorial health warning in cigarette packages in all Africa countries.
  • Country-level and regional level tax policies that are consistent with the FCTC Article 6 guidelines.
  • Integrating Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and tobacco control into development and health agendas.
  • Allocating appropriate funds from the national budget to tobacco control.
  • Promoting NCSs and tobacco control agenda by targeting regional bodies.

ATCA making a difference:

  • Funded and supported legislation and policy campaigns in 10 sub-Saharan Africa countries.
  • Trained more than 210 journalists, 150 tobacco control campaigners, 150 Members of Parliament of FCTC and tobacco and control.
  • Created 7 tobacco control network in seven sub-Saharan African countries.
  • Provided grants to NGOs, Ministries of Health and regional blocks to implement FCTC at country and regional level.
  • Supported 4 countries to draft NCDs Action Plans.
  • Published around 500 articles in newspapers.
  • Supported media campaigns in countries like Botswana and Senegal.
  • The supported tax increase in Togo, Benin, Niger tobacco levy in Botswana, etc.
  • Placing NCDs and tobacco control high on the agenda of policy-makers in the WAEMU region.

What we do?

  • Monitor tobacco industry behaviour, tactics and output.
  • Conduct research and publish the finding to support policy change.
  • Publish independent information on tobacco use and its impact on governments, decision-makers, researchers, media & concerned citizens.
  • Develop tobacco taxation campaigns (increasing tobacco tax and policy change).
  • Provide technical assistance to our members and government through MoH.
  • Empower and drive leadership programmes on tobacco control.
  • Co-ordinate member alliance-building and networking.
  • Fund tobacco control projects (legislation, taxation, etc.).
  • Create and execute tobacco control media campaigns.
