Annual Celebration Of The African Woman In Tobacco Control

August 05, 2022 | 1:30 PM GMT

Women have historically played leading roles in the tobacco control movement in Africa. They have contributed immensely to the advancement of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) across the continent, heading governmental agencies, or engaging bravely in campaigns to isolate tobacco industry interference as civil society leaders.

While their efforts and achievements are enormous, women have hardly ever been celebrated for their very valuable input to tobacco control in Africa. Consequently, the African Tobacco Control Alliance (ATCA), proposes an event to recognise the outstanding tobacco control contributions of women in the continent.

ATCA plans to commemorate the 2022 International African Women’s Day through an inter-generational roundtable to celebrate African women in tobacco control. The virtual gathering is being planned for Thursday 05 August 2022.
